You dont need an active telephone service to connect to the nbn®. However, there are some nbn® technology types which use the copper telephone line to deliver nbn® to your property:

  1. Fibre to the Node (FTTN) – This is where fibre optics is delivered to your street and then high-speed internet is transferred to a copper cable that runs into your home. The node is a box that is constructed in the street that transfers the internet from fibre optics to copper. If you have an existing copper telephone line connected to your property, NBN Co will use this for your nbn® service, however, your phone line does not need to be active

  2. Fibre to the Building (FTTB) – This is where fibre optics is delivered to your building and then copper is used to distribute high speed internet around your building. This is typically used in apartment blocks or shopping centres.

  3. Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) – Fibre optics is delivered by connecting to a small Distribution Point Unit (DPU), this is usually located inside a pit on the street. From here, the existing copper network is connected to the fibre to form the final nbn® connection
